I Ching Explained

In work & career

At work, this hexagram appears around disputes: credit, contracts, direction, territory. Document everything and keep communication in writing from now on. If you are right on the merits, a calm factual case beats an emotional one. But first ask whether winning is worth the political cost. The hexagram respects the person who can say: this fight costs more than it pays, I withdraw. If you must engage, engage once, fully, and then let the process work. Repeated skirmishes help no one.

Hexagram 6 Conflict — In work & career

讼 · Sòng  ·  upper Heaven over lower Water

This hexagram names open conflict: heaven pulling up while water sinks down, two forces moving apart.

Upper ☰ HeavenLower ☵ WaterMetal over Water

The reading

Conflict is the hexagram of honest disagreement. Heaven above and water below move in opposite directions by nature. This is not misunderstanding, it is genuine opposition of interests or views. The hexagram is strikingly modern in its advice: it does not tell you to crush the other side. It asks whether the dispute is worth having at all, and if it is, to keep it contained, factual, and aimed at settlement rather than triumph.

The deeper teaching is about choosing your battles. Most conflicts escalate because each side needs to be seen as right; the hexagram suggests stepping back far enough to see what the fight is actually costing. There is also a practical warning: meet a strong opponent with a strong case, or do not engage. Half-hearted conflict, pursued from pride but abandoned from fear, earns you the costs of fighting with none of the resolution.

The image

Heaven above, water below: one rises, one falls, and they never meet. The old image is two parties before a judge, each certain the right is theirs.

Win the argument and you may still lose what matters.

When you cast this hexagram

  • A real disagreement is here or approaching; do not pretend otherwise.
  • You could win the fight but lose the relationship; choose.
  • Someone is challenging you; decide if this battle is worth it.
  • Step back and count the true cost before engaging further.

In love and relationships

In love, Conflict means the disagreement is real and will not dissolve by ignoring it. Name the actual issue: not the tone, not the last incident, the underlying need. Talk about that. The hexagram favors the partner who seeks understanding over the partner who seeks victory; scorekeeping kills intimacy faster than any single fight. If the conflict is about something structural (values, life direction), no amount of communication skill will fix a genuine mismatch. Sometimes the honest resolution is to part with respect.

When you have a decision to make

Deciding under Conflict, first separate the decision from the drama. Ask: if no one needed to be right, what would the sensible course be? Often the answer is obvious once ego leaves the room. If the conflict involves a formal process: legal, contractual, institutional, get proper advice and follow it; this is no place for improvisation. (This hexagram counsels process, not outcomes.) And consider the third option most fighters miss: an early settlement both sides can live with beats a victory that poisons everything after.

The six changing lines

Read only the lines that came up moving in your own cast. If none did, stay with the hexagram as a whole. Each line below links to the hexagram that line turns into.

Line 6 · yang ○ · if it changes → 47 Oppression

You may win the prize and lose it by morning. Do not push any conflict to its bitter end.

The matter now goes before a fair and capable judge. Trust the process itself; the decision that comes will be just.

Line 4 · yang ○ · if it changes → 59 Dispersion

Victory is genuinely not available on this path. Turn around, accept the new direction, and find your peace in it.

This is not your fight to lead. Stay in your lane, do your work well, and guard what is already yours.

Line 2 · yang ○ · if it changes → 12 Standstill

You cannot win this particular fight. Go home, regroup quietly, and choose better ground for the battles that matter.

Line 1 · yin ✕ · if it changes → 10 Treading

Do not drag this dispute out longer than necessary. A short clash with some criticism beats a long, draining war.

How it relates to the other hexagrams

These links are derived from the line structure, not from editorial opinion. Flip a line, reverse the stack, or read the inner lines, and you land on a specific neighbour.

Every line flips. This is the exact opposite stance: the position you are not taking, which is often the thing the reading is contrasting you with.

Turn the whole stack upside down and you get this. The same circumstance seen from the other end — usually the person on the other side of it.
