The reading

Darkening of the Light is the hexagram of the wounded sun. Fire sinks beneath the earth: intelligence and talent find themselves in a dark time, under powers that punish brightness. This is the situation of the wise serving the corrupt, the honest employee under a bad boss, the truth-teller in a hostile room. The light is not gone; it is buried. Your task is not to shine but to survive, keeping the flame alive unseen.

Concealment is a skill, not a surrender. Lower your profile, avoid the spotlight, and do not argue with the darkness; you cannot win that fight now. Keep your standards inward: study, practice, and tend your integrity where it cannot be seen. Do not let the night make you bitter. Times turn. The sun that sets also rises, and those who kept their flame alive in the dark are ready when the light is needed again.

The image

Light sinks into the earth; darkness covers the land. The wise veil their brightness and endure, keeping the inner flame alive through the night.

Hide the flame to save it; darkness is not defeat.

When you cast this hexagram

  • Learning the wisdom of hiding your brilliance to survive now.
  • Practicing outward compliance while keeping your inward integrity intact daily.
  • Choosing the discipline of silence when speech invites punishment now.
  • Surviving the night so you can serve the dawn later.

In love and relationships

In love, Darkening of the Light counsels protecting the flame from hostile winds. If family, circumstance, or a partner's dark season threatens the bond, do not flaunt your happiness or force confrontations. Tend the love quietly: small kindnesses, private loyalty, patience. Keep your own inner light alive too; do not let someone else's darkness extinguish your sense of worth. Love kept alive in secret is still alive. When the season turns, what you protected will be ready to shine again.

In work and career

At work, this hexagram describes the honest person under bad leadership. Do not confront the darkness head-on; you will be punished for your brightness. Lower your profile, do your work well but quietly, and avoid becoming a target. Keep your skills sharp and your integrity intact in private. Build your exit or your endurance plan calmly. The dark time will pass, as dark times do, and those who kept their flame alive will be ready when light is needed again.

When you have a decision to make

When a real decision is on the table, Darkening of the Light advises against the bold, visible move. This is not the season for confrontation or grand gestures; choose the option that protects what matters while staying out of the spotlight. If you must decide, decide to wait, to prepare quietly, to keep your powder dry. The right decision here is often a non-decision: endure, conceal, and preserve your strength for the dawn you cannot hasten but can be ready for.

The six changing lines

Read only the lines that came up moving in your own cast. If none did, stay with the hexagram as a whole. Each line below links to the hexagram that line turns into.

Line 6 · yin ✕ · if it changes → 22 Grace

Darkness at its extreme: first raised to the sky, then sunk into the earth. Do not cling to falling powers; their end is certain.

Like the sage who hid his wisdom under a tyrant, keep your inner truth veiled. Perseverance in quiet integrity brings benefit.

Line 4 · yin ✕ · if it changes → 55 Abundance

Enter deep enough to grasp the heart of the darkness, then leave through the gate. Understanding first, exit second; do not linger inside.

Line 3 · yang ○ · if it changes → 24 Return

Hunt the source of the darkness itself and capture its chief. Yet do not press your righteousness too hard; overzealous correction backfires.

Line 2 · yin ✕ · if it changes → 11 Peace

The darkening wounds your stride, but rescue is at hand. Lean on strong support, a sturdy horse, and move swiftly; good fortune follows.

Line 1 · yang ○ · if it changes → 15 Modesty

The wounded bird lowers its wings and flies low. At the start of the dark time, travel humbly and endure hunger; criticism will follow, but keep going.
