Hexagram 12: Standstill
否 · Pǐ · upper Heaven over lower Earth
Heaven rises and earth sinks, and the two never meet: this is disconnection.
The reading
Standstill is the mirror image of Peace: the same two powers now moving apart. Heaven climbs, earth sinks, and between them no exchange happens. In human terms the channels are closed: messages go unanswered, meetings produce nothing, and influence sits with people whose values are not yours. Pushing harder does not help, because the structure itself resists movement. This hexagram does not ask you to fix the blockage. It asks you to stop feeding it.
Your work now is preservation. Pull back your energy and attention from what cannot respond, and keep them where they stay yours. Maintain your standards; do not compromise them just to get a hearing. Standstill is a winter season, and winter is not failure: it is the time when roots survive by going deep. Hold your position with dignity, tend your inner life, and be ready to move when the first signs of thaw appear.
The image
Heaven moves upward and earth moves downward, each retreating from the other. Where high and low refuse to meet, nothing grows; the wise withdraw inward and guard what is essential.
When nothing connects, protect what matters and stop feeding the rest.
When you cast this hexagram
- A project, deal, or relationship where every door stays shut.
- An organization where the wrong people hold all the influence.
- A negotiation where the other side refuses every reasonable term.
- Burnout from pouring effort into a situation that cannot respond.
In love and relationships
In love, Standstill describes a connection where the current no longer flows. Conversations loop without resolution, affection meets a wall, or outside circumstances keep you apart. Do not chase harder; pursuit now only deepens the freeze. Protect your dignity and your tenderness alike. Tend your own life, keep your standards, and let the other person feel the absence of your effort. If the thaw comes, it will come from a change in conditions, not from one more appeal.
In work and career
At work this is the stalled season: budgets frozen, decisions postponed, credit going to the wrong people. Do not spend your political capital trying to force movement; the structure resists it. Instead, protect your position and your reputation. Do good quiet work, document your contributions, and keep your skills sharp. Avoid aligning with the failing order just to stay comfortable. Winter favors those who preserve their integrity, because spring always audits who kept theirs.
When you have a decision to make
When a real decision is on the table, Standstill counsels delay and defense. Do not sign, launch, or commit while the channels are closed; anything built now inherits the blockage. The decision to make is a protective one: what to withdraw, what to pause, what to keep intact. Set a condition for re-engagement and use the waiting time to strengthen your position. Acting now would spend resources on frozen ground; patience preserves them for the thaw.
The six changing lines
Read only the lines that came up moving in your own cast. If none did, stay with the hexagram as a whole. Each line below links to the hexagram that line turns into.
The blockage overturns: first the standstill, then joy. What was frozen now moves; receive the turning with gratitude and steady hands.
The standstill breaks. For those of strong character this is good fortune; secure what returns the way you would tie a boat to strong roots.
A higher order arrives and the freeze begins to lift. Act on the new mandate without fault; shared fields of joy open before you.
This is the shame of the standstill itself, endured at its center. Bear it without self-blame; the disgrace belongs to the season, not to you.
Endure what cannot be changed and keep your dignity. Lesser natures may thrive in this freeze, but yours is preserved by standing apart.
Withdraw together with your own people, roots still entangled. Shared retreat with the right companions brings good fortune; do not go alone.
How it relates to the other hexagrams
These links are derived from the line structure, not from editorial opinion. Flip a line, reverse the stack, or read the inner lines, and you land on a specific neighbour.
Nuclear · 互卦
Lines 2–4 and 3–5 of this hexagram form another one. It is the inner situation — what is really going on underneath what you were asking about.
Complementary · 错卦
Every line flips. This is the exact opposite stance: the position you are not taking, which is often the thing the reading is contrasting you with.
Inverse · 综卦
Turn the whole stack upside down and you get this. The same circumstance seen from the other end — usually the person on the other side of it.
