Hexagram 30: The Clinging

离 · Lí  ·  upper Fire over lower Fire

Fire clings to what it burns: nothing blazes without fuel.

Upper ☲ FireLower ☲ FireFire over Fire

The reading

The Clinging is the hexagram of dependence rightly understood. Fire cannot exist alone; it must cling to fuel, and its nature is decided by what it holds. Your brightness depends on what you hold: work worthy of your energy, people worthy of your loyalty, principles worthy of your devotion. The yielding line at the center shows softness rightly placed within strength. Clinging is not weakness here. It is how light happens.

But fire also warns: it consumes what it clings to, and it dies without renewal. Attachment must be tended, not assumed. Feed the right fires daily: the craft, the relationship, the purpose. And notice what depends on you, because others cling to your light the way you cling to yours. The great person, as the image says, extends brightness in every direction. Dependence, rightly held on both sides, becomes not a chain but a constellation.

The image

Fire rises upon fire, brightness doubled upon itself. The wise continue this shining to every quarter, because light rightly held does not dim with sharing.

You are the fire; choose your fuel with care.

When you cast this hexagram

  • You must choose what your fire will cling to now.
  • Looking hard at a bond where both sides depend completely.
  • A moment that calls for clarity, vision, and honest illumination.
  • Burning out from feeding a fire that was never yours.

In love and relationships

In love, the Clinging asks what your fire holds. A healthy bond is mutual clinging: two people choosing each other as fuel, burning brighter together. But examine the fuel honestly. Are you clinging to the person or to the idea of them, to love or to the fear of being alone? Fire that clings to what smokes fills the house with fumes. Attach to what burns clean: respect, honesty, genuine warmth. Tended daily, such a fire does not consume; it illuminates.

In work and career

At work, this hexagram is about right attachment: the mission you serve, the team you belong to, the craft you feed. Your energy is fire; make sure the fuel is worthy, because you become the brightness of what you burn. Cling to work that burns clean: honest products, real skills, people of substance. Avoid the smoky fuels of status games and empty prestige; they consume without illuminating. And remember others cling to your light. Lead so you feed them rather than burn them out.

When you have a decision to make

When a real decision is on the table, the Clinging asks: what will this choice have you clinging to? Every option is fuel; pick the one that burns clean. Decide for the attachment that illuminates rather than consumes: the honest work, the worthy people, the true purpose. Beware the glittering fuel that smokes: prestige without substance, intensity without warmth. The right decision here attaches your fire to something that makes you brighter, not something that slowly chokes you.

The six changing lines

Read only the lines that came up moving in your own cast. If none did, stay with the hexagram as a whole. Each line below links to the hexagram that line turns into.

Line 6 · yang ○ · if it changes → 55 Abundance

The king marches forth with this fire, punishing the chief and sparing the followers. Righteous severity at the top carries no blame.

Tears fall in floods, with sighs and lamentation. Yet this honest grief cleanses the attachment, and good fortune follows.

Line 4 · yang ○ · if it changes → 22 Grace

Fire comes suddenly, blazing up and burning out. What flares without fuel to sustain it dies fast and is thrown aside.

In the light of the setting sun, lamenting instead of singing. Railing against age and endings darkens the fire; misfortune follows gloom.

The yellow light: warm, centered, balanced brightness. This is the ideal of the hexagram, and it brings supreme good fortune.

Line 1 · yang ○ · if it changes → 56 The Wanderer

Tread carefully at the start, with reverence for the fire you carry. Respect for what you cling to keeps the first step free of blame.

How it relates to the other hexagrams

These links are derived from the line structure, not from editorial opinion. Flip a line, reverse the stack, or read the inner lines, and you land on a specific neighbour.

Every line flips. This is the exact opposite stance: the position you are not taking, which is often the thing the reading is contrasting you with.
