Hexagram 41: Decrease

损 · Sǔn  ·  upper Mountain over lower Lake

Decrease is the art of giving something up on purpose.

Upper ☶ MountainLower ☱ LakeEarth over Metal

The reading

Decrease is the hexagram of deliberate sacrifice. The lower trigram gives up its strength to the upper: the lake yields to the mountain, and what is below is reduced so that what is above can rise. This is not loss but investment. You surrender time, comfort, or resources now for a larger good later, and the hexagram insists the exchange is sincere. Give with a whole heart, and the decrease becomes a gain.

The measure of the sacrifice matters. Decrease only what is excessive, and only for a worthy purpose; reckless cutting harms the very foundation you mean to strengthen. Keep the giving voluntary and proportionate, and watch that it flows upward toward something real, not into vanity or fear. Done rightly, decrease purifies: fewer wants, clearer aims, stronger character. What you release deliberately returns to you in another form, increased.

The image

Below the mountain lies the lake, its waters held back and lowered. The wise restrain their anger and curb their desires, decreasing what is excessive to keep the whole in balance.

Give up the lesser on purpose, and the greater grows.

When you cast this hexagram

  • Deliberately giving up comfort now for a greater good later.
  • The excess in your life asking to be cut back.
  • The call now to strengthen the whole at personal cost.
  • Paring your life down to what truly matters most now.

In love and relationships

In love, Decrease asks what you will give up for the bond. Perhaps it is a habit that wounds your partner, time spent elsewhere, or the need to always be right. Give it up willingly and without keeping score; sacrifice counted is not sacrifice. But decrease must flow both ways over time. If only you ever give, the lake will run dry. A healthy bond takes turns: each partner decreases a little so the love itself can increase.

In work and career

At work, Decrease is the disciplined cut: the budget trimmed, the scope narrowed, the meeting canceled so real work can happen. Reduce what is excessive and watch the essential grow stronger. Give resources upward willingly when the cause is worthy; loyalty invested in a good leader returns. But do not decrease yourself into exhaustion. Sacrifice is an investment, not a lifestyle. The professional who gives strategically thrives; the one who gives endlessly disappears.

When you have a decision to make

When a real decision is on the table, Decrease asks what you are willing to surrender. Name the sacrifice plainly: time, money, comfort, pride. Then check that it flows upward toward something genuinely greater, not into a void. Decrease only the excessive; do not cut into the foundation. And make the giving wholehearted, because a resented sacrifice poisons the very gain it was meant to buy. The right decision here trades the lesser for the greater, deliberately.

The six changing lines

Read only the lines that came up moving in your own cast. If none did, stay with the hexagram as a whole. Each line below links to the hexagram that line turns into.

Line 6 · yang ○ · if it changes → 19 Approach

At the top, give without decreasing yourself: serve all, cling to none. Increase without loss; those who serve freely gain everything.

Increase arrives unasked, like a great gift you cannot refuse. Accept it graciously at this central place; great good fortune follows.

Line 4 · yin ✕ · if it changes → 38 Opposition

Decrease the ailment quickly and joy follows. Address the weakness directly and without delay; prompt correction here carries no blame.

Three walking together breeds suspicion and one departs; walking alone, you find a true companion. Decrease the crowd; keep the one who is real.

Hold firm and steady; this is not the moment for bold new ventures. Increase others without diminishing yourself, and good fortune follows.

At the outset, move quickly to make the decrease. Do not deliberate endlessly; prompt, decisive giving at the start carries no blame.
