I Ching Explained

In love & relationships

In love, Development is the slow courtship done right: the bond that deepens stage by stage, each secure before the next. Do not rush the milestones; the goose does not leap from shore to plateau. Honor where you are: dating, committing, building, each with its own work. A love developed gradually is visible only in retrospect, and then it is unmistakable. The couples who last are not the ones who burned brightest at the start but the ones who kept advancing, rooted, year after year.

Hexagram 53 Development — In love & relationships

渐 · Jiàn  ·  upper Wind over lower Mountain

Wind moves over the mountain, gradual and rooted, like the wild goose advancing one stage at a time.

The reading

Development is the hexagram of gradual growth. The wild goose is its emblem, advancing shore to cliff to plateau, each stage secure before the next. Nothing here leaps. The mountain below gives rootedness, the wind above gives steady penetration, and together they describe every ascent: the career built skill by skill, the craft mastered over decades, the character refined one habit at a time. Impatience is the only enemy; the pace itself is the guarantee.

The discipline of Development is to honor the stage you are in. Do not despise the shore for the plateau's sake; each stage has its work, and skipping stages is how people fall. Marry the process, not the milestone: show up daily and measure against your past, not others' present. Growth this gradual is invisible daily and unmistakable yearly. Stay rooted, keep advancing, and one day you will look back and barely recognize the shore.

The image

Wind drifts over the mountain, patient and unceasing. The wise refine their character step by step, improving what is within the way wind shapes the peak.

Grow like the mountain is watched: slowly, and forever.

When you cast this hexagram

  • Trusting the slow pace because the pace is the guarantee.
  • A project that will take years, not months, to mature.
  • Honoring the stage you are in, not the next one.
  • Choosing the marriage that deepens over the spark that fades.

In love and relationships

In love, Development is the slow courtship done right: the bond that deepens stage by stage, each secure before the next. Do not rush the milestones; the goose does not leap from shore to plateau. Honor where you are: dating, committing, building, each with its own work. A love developed gradually is visible only in retrospect, and then it is unmistakable. The couples who last are not the ones who burned brightest at the start but the ones who kept advancing, rooted, year after year.

In work and career

At work, Development is the career built skill by skill, the mastery earned over decades. Do not despise your current stage or leap for titles you have not earned; each level has its own work, and skipped stages collapse. Marry the process: show up daily, refine constantly, and measure against your past. Promotions will come as a byproduct of depth. The professionals everyone admires in retrospect are the ones who advanced like the goose, one secure stage at a time.

When you have a decision to make

When a real decision is on the table, Development says to choose the path with stages, not the leap. Favor the option that grows you gradually and securely, even if it looks slower. Decide for the rooted ascent: the role you grow into, the skill built level by level, the commitment deepened over time. Do not choose the shortcut; what is not earned does not hold. The right decision here is the one your future self will thank you for having built slowly.

The six changing lines

Read only the lines that came up moving in your own cast. If none did, stay with the hexagram as a whole. Each line below links to the hexagram that line turns into.

Line 6 · yang ○ · if it changes → 39 Obstruction

The goose rises to the highlands, its feathers fit for the sacred dance. The completed ascent becomes beautiful; good fortune.

The goose reaches the high mound; fruition is delayed three years. Yet nothing can finally hinder it; good fortune comes to the patient.

Line 4 · yin ✕ · if it changes → 33 Retreat

The goose advances to the tree and finds the flat branch. An unexpected resting place at this stage; no blame in pausing here.

The goose reaches the plateau, but the ground is contested. The husband marches and does not return; misfortune, unless you stand firm against robbers.

Line 2 · yin ✕ · if it changes → 57 The Gentle

The goose advances to the cliff, eating and drinking in peace. The stage is secure and provisioned; good fortune in steady advance.

Line 1 · yin ✕ · if it changes → 37 The Family

The goose reaches the shore, the first stage. The young are in danger here and criticism follows, but the advance itself carries no blame.

Turn the whole stack upside down and you get this. The same circumstance seen from the other end — usually the person on the other side of it.
