I Ching Explained

In work & career

At work this is the red alert: the team past its capacity, the budget past its limit, the founder past her competence. Something must give, and soon. Either cut scope ruthlessly until the load fits the beam, or rebuild the supports: hire the strength you lack, redesign the role, restructure the deal. Leaders fail here not from acting wrongly but from waiting. Name the overload plainly, choose lighten or rebuild, and move before the structure chooses for you.

Hexagram 28 Preponderance of the Great — In work & career

大过 · Dà Guò  ·  upper Lake over lower Wind

The load is heavier than the beam: four strong lines in the middle with weak supports at both ends, like a ridgepole sagging under its roof.

The reading

Preponderance of the Great is the hexagram of the overloaded structure. The image is a ridgepole sagging in the middle, great weight resting on weak ends. Something in your life has outgrown its supports: the business past its cash, the role past its holder, the bond past its foundation. This is not a flaw in the design. It is what happens when success outgrows its frame, and it will not correct itself.

You have two moves, and delay is not one of them. Lighten the load: cut the scope, shed the weight, bring the structure back within its strength. Or rebuild: replace the weak ends with firm supports, redesign the frame for the size things have become. What you cannot do is add more weight and hope. Extraordinary pressure demands extraordinary response. Move quickly, move decisively, and the sag becomes either relief or renewal.

The image

The lake rises above the forest, water where wood should stand. The wise stand alone without fear and leave the world without regret, because extraordinary times demand extraordinary bearing.

When the beam sags, you either lighten the load or raise a new roof.

When you cast this hexagram

  • The load you carry has outgrown the beam beneath it.
  • Burnout from carrying far too much for far too long.
  • The moment demands action now; delay is not an option.
  • An organization that has outgrown its leadership and its systems.

In love and relationships

In love, Preponderance means the relationship is carrying more than its structure allows: too much need, too much history, too much unsaid. The beam is sagging. You must either lighten it, with honest conversation that sets down weight, or rebuild it, with new agreements strong enough for what the bond has become. What will not work is adding more: more demands, more tests, more pressure. Act quickly and together, or watch the ridgepole give way.

When you have a decision to make

When a real decision is on the table, Preponderance says the time for deliberation is over. The structure is past its limit, so decide now: lighten or rebuild. Lighten means cutting scope, shedding obligations, choosing the smaller viable path. Rebuild means replacing weak supports with strong ones, whatever that costs. Do not choose a third option of hoping the beam holds. It will not. Decide quickly, decide completely, and let the relief or the renewal begin.

The six changing lines

Read only the lines that came up moving in your own cast. If none did, stay with the hexagram as a whole. Each line below links to the hexagram that line turns into.

Wading the river with water over your head. The crossing was attempted too late and too deep; misfortune, though no blame for the courage.

Line 5 · yang ○ · if it changes → 32 Duration

The withered willow blooms with flowers; the old wife takes a young husband. A strange renewal: no blame, but no praise either.

Line 4 · yang ○ · if it changes → 48 The Well

The ridgepole is braced and raised again. Good fortune, but only if the repair is honest; hidden motives here turn to shame.

Line 3 · yang ○ · if it changes → 47 Oppression

The ridgepole sags at the very center of the strain. This is the overload made visible; misfortune, unless the load is lightened.

Line 2 · yang ○ · if it changes → 31 Influence

The withered willow puts out new shoots; the old husband takes a young wife. Renewal from unexpected pairing brings nothing but benefit.

Spread white rushes under the load, softening where it rests. Humble, careful preparation at the base carries no blame.

How it relates to the other hexagrams

These links are derived from the line structure, not from editorial opinion. Flip a line, reverse the stack, or read the inner lines, and you land on a specific neighbour.

Nuclear · 互卦

乾 · Qián

Lines 2–4 and 3–5 of this hexagram form another one. It is the inner situation — what is really going on underneath what you were asking about.

Complementary · 错卦

Every line flips. This is the exact opposite stance: the position you are not taking, which is often the thing the reading is contrasting you with.

Inverse · 综卦

Turn the whole stack upside down and you get this. The same circumstance seen from the other end — usually the person on the other side of it. This hexagram reverses into itself, so it is its own inverse.
