I Ching Explained

In work & career

At work this is the accumulation phase: building skills, capital, reputation, and alliances while spending little. Do not chase the quick win or the visible promotion; the mountain does not hurry. Take the training, do the unglamorous work, save the resources. Your restraint is noticed by those who matter. When the decisive moment comes, and it will, you will move with the full weight of everything stored. Great careers are built in seasons exactly like this one.

Hexagram 26 The Taming Power of the Great — In work & career

大畜 · Dà Chù  ·  upper Mountain over lower Heaven

You are holding great power in reserve: talent, resources, or momentum that is deliberately not being spent.

The reading

This is the hexagram of great accumulation. Where Small Taming held back a little force, the Great Taming holds back a great one: heaven itself contained within the mountain. You have more strength than the situation currently needs, and wisdom says not to spend it. Restraint here is not fear but strategy. Every day you hold the power in reserve, it grows; every day you study, practice, and prepare, the eventual release becomes more decisive.

The mountain's stillness is the key: this is accumulation with a purpose, not hoarding from anxiety. Feed the reserve deliberately. Learn the craft deeply, build the capital patiently, strengthen the body and the alliances. And watch for the moment the hexagram promises, when restraint ends and the stored power moves. Those who spend early arrive at the decisive moment empty. Those who tamed the great arrive with everything, and the world makes way.

The image

Heaven lies hidden within the mountain, vast strength held in stillness. The wise gather many words and deeds from the past, storing learning the way mountains store the sky.

Power stored is power doubled; power spent early is power lost.

When you cast this hexagram

  • Sitting on strength you could spend now but choose not to.
  • A season of deep study and deliberate preparation before acting.
  • Building reserves of money, energy, or skill for a decisive moment.
  • Holding a powerful ambition in check until the moment is right.

In love and relationships

In love, the Great Taming counsels restraint with purpose. Do not spend the whole of your passion at once; hold something in reserve, and let the relationship deepen through patience rather than intensity. This is also the hexagram of taming a difficult dynamic: the temper you are learning to master, the pattern you refuse to repeat. Restraint here is not coldness. It is the discipline that keeps love strong enough for the moments that will truly test it.

When you have a decision to make

When a real decision is on the table, the Great Taming says: gather more before you spend. You are not yet at the decisive moment, so decide to prepare rather than to act. Choose the option that builds your reserves: the training, the savings, the alliance, the skill. Decline the premature move, however tempting. The right decision now is restraint with a purpose, so that when the moment that counts arrives, you meet it with everything you have.

The six changing lines

Read only the lines that came up moving in your own cast. If none did, stay with the hexagram as a whole. Each line below links to the hexagram that line turns into.

Line 6 · yang ○ · if it changes → 11 Peace

At the top, the tamed power carries you onto heaven's own highway. Restraint complete, the way opens wide; success.

Geld the boar and its tusks lose their danger. Removing the wildness at the root, rather than fighting it, brings good fortune.

Put the headboard on the young bull before its horns grow. Early, gentle restraint shapes great strength; great good fortune.

Line 3 · yang ○ · if it changes → 41 Decrease

A good horse, ready for the pursuit. Train daily in difficulty and keep the chariot ready; constancy now brings good fortune later.

Line 2 · yang ○ · if it changes → 22 Grace

The straps are taken off the wagon's axle; it cannot roll. Accept this forced stillness; the restraint itself is the taming at work.

Danger at the very start of the accumulation. The favorable move is to stop: do not begin spending what you have only just started to gather.
